trailer hitch swapable years

does the trailer hitches off of a newer truck fit my 78 f150 4x4? ie-does a 84 f150 fit mine?

It should. I pulled one at the junk yard of a mid 80's and put it on my 73 F100

I'm pretty sure most hitch manufactures have one hitch listed for our trucks up to '96. If you have the name of the company that makes it, you can look it up to be sure. Like the hitch I just got for my '77 is a Reese 36025 lists '73-96 trucks, 78-96 broncos, and '71-93 dodges

My Reese fits many different Fords also. When I bought it, it came with an installation packet with various different bolts and shims to accommodate the different frames.

It all depends on the hitch. Some are one size fits all. Some are custom fitted. But as a general rule....a hitch that fits an 84 should fit your 78. Worst case....ya gotta drill a couple holes.

sweet! i was just using the 84 as an example. but im going to goto the yard and try to find a good hitch that i can use

Cool. Try to find a custom fit, fully welded hitch. The universal fit, bolt-together designs are junk. A factory hitch from a pre-99 F-250 or 350 would be an excellent choice.
