I sold cars for 8 years and no where that I worked minded trading that way as long as the numbers worked. It's no different than buying a car from the auction. The books still show profit on the sale and then a trade bought in even if the trade is worth more than the sold vehicle.
And, of course you will do better selling your trade yourself than you will trading. The dealer is cutting his profit out of your trade in number.
Most new car dealers I worked for take trade in cars to an auction......not get them from there.....unless they are low mileage or rare or something. If this is a used car lot it may be different......but I can't see an individual used car dealer going to work today and paying out alot of difference...... thinking he can get it back later on that trade in sale.......unless they move a whole lot of cars they can't afford that these days.

Even small car lots have floor plans that they can float the trades or auction purchases over 30, 60, or 90 days.
And both of the large new car dealerships I worked for only sent the crappy trade-ins to auction. All the late model, nice trades went straight to clean-up, shop for inspection/repair, and then the used lot.

Bottom line then........we both did our time .........will he get hosed on the trade ?? or not ?? I say yes...... unless he is a fast talker/prime negotiator or car salesman himself.

If they are asking that much over book for the Excursion, it would be easy to negotiate the trade by just getting them to go by the book.
For sure it's all a big game... Absolutely, I will give them what they are asking for their Ex, but then I'll need to get what I want for my trade. It's all give and take. I too have been in the car business before... Hopefully tomorrow will find me with a new Ex, if not, there will always be another one. It's just nice to find a clean one that already has the lift and wheels and tires that I like. Those are both expensive mods.
Coming from a PSD, I was very disappointed with the excursion. I was expecting 13-14 on the highway and don't get too close to that. In town is downright terrible.
I also bought the v10 because of the price difference, and still think it was the right decision from a practical standpoint, but I really hate the mileage.
