I just swapped in my ZF and i got some questions. When i am at a idel and the truck is warmed up all kind of noises come from the transmission. and then when i let off my foot to coast a little bit and when i come to a stop there are kind of a sharp gear to gear noise. the noise is not like a grinding like something is braking, it kind of sounds like my buddys old rearend that was noit setup right. any body can explain this or have any other storys of noises from there zf to make me feel a little bit better about this.

I hope someone will chime in. My ZF is also making strange noises and started shifting poorly this weekend. I'm planning on tearing into it as soon as I can get it back out of the truck.

I have heard a lot of bad news about the ZFs around this area. There's a couple guys running them and have had to have them rebuilt. I thought they were supposed to be rugged.

I'm not sure the problem I have is an issue with the the transmission being weak. I bought it used off of ebay, supposedly with 88000 miles, but I'm not really sure what I got. It may have sat in a puddle for years for all I know.

progolfer, I noticed you have just converted from an e4od - have you installed the correct shift boot? I know when I converted mine I took it for a test drive with the boot off and it made all kinds of racket, but the boot fixed it. It was amazing how much noise came thru without the boot in place. So I would say the ZF is pretty growly in normal operation, mine sounds like my uncle's '65 Chevy feed truck with a 4-speed (whatever they put in those), but it's been in there now for over 50K miles and it works just fine.

jas88 thanks knowing that really rest my nerves. Because the transfer case hole just has a old shirt thown over it until i can get a new boot. The boot for the trans shifter is just kind of there not bolted down because it is broke so i am geting a new one of those to.
