Changing a cam?

I was thinking about changng my cam, well actually I have to its flat on three cylinders, I saw a nice cheap crane performer or something like that at summit with a 268/268 duration for about $100, I dont need tons of power its just a daily driver. How hard would it be Ive never done one, do I have to pull the engine? I need this thing to get to school and work so it would have to be a saturday job. Do I have to change the timing. And has anybody done this and found it to be a bad cam? by the way its a 351 M thanks,Matt

Changing a cam?

You may not need to pull the engine. You will need to get as much out of the way on the front of the truck as you can. Such as radiator and support, grille, etc. You will have to remove the water pump(good opportunity to replace it if it looks questionable)
fan, fuel pump, timing cover, distributor, intake, and valve covers.
If it's more than slighty higher than stock cam lift, you'll need to consider a set of matching valve springs. You will also have to get a carb that will sufficiently feed the cam.
If the engine has a lot of wear or is just plain tired, you may want to go through everything. A new cam won't revive a tired engine very much.
You may want to find somebody with some experience to help you. There's a little bit involved in making a cam swap.
Please feel free to e-mail me any questions if you want.
