Hub lock problem

Hub lock problem

My drivers side vacuum hub is making noise when in 4wd, it stays quiet when the accelorator is steady, but when speeding up or slowing down it makes a rubbing/grinding noise. The problem goes away when I switch to 2wd. I disassembled the knuckle to check for issues and found none. The vacuum system seems to be working normally, and when the front tires are off the ground, I tested to make sure the hub was engaged. Anyone heard of this before, or can shed some light?

Sorry, I'm new here. I thought the truck info would show up. 2008 F150 5.4 with a Skyjacker 6" lift

I wonder if it could be an axle bearing that is making the noise rather than the hub. Could you hear anything when you had the wheels off the ground and spun the wheel?

No, no noises are audible at slow speed, even with the wheels up in the air, and I do not suspect the bearing because the noise would be constant, it currently only grinds when pushing or coming off the accelerator, and then only for a second or two.

I am dealing with the same problem with mine right now. I have a (Playing card in the spoke sound) coming from my drivers side hub when in 4WD. The 4WD works great. When I go back to 2WD it goes away. I have read the threads on the IWE system and changed out my vacuum solenoid on the firewall thinking that might be the problem. Without a vacuum pump I haven't been able to diagnose the problem any further. From what I have read; If the solenoid is good, along with the vacuum lines and check valves; Its the hub actuator on the side that is making noise.
Can anyone else verify or shed some more light on the subject?

Could be that the gear on your cv shaft has stripped out the gear in the IWE actuator, and all vacuum is working fine, but the gears are stripped in the IWE causeing the grinding noise when the front driveshaft is trying to drive the front wheel.
