I bought a 1977 351M F100 automatic and want to learn how to take care of it myself. Recently it has been driving poorly - specifically, it tends to stutter as I accelerate through gears (almost sounds like a click and hissing sound, usually 2-3 in a row) and has begun to cut off when taking a slow turn or idling at a stop light. I have read blog sites and looked through manuals, which make me think that it is either a timing chain problem (maybe worn and slipping?) or a vacuum/hose issue. I haven't found a mechanic yet that seems confident (or competent) enough to work on the truck and any suggestions on what the problem might be would be helpful as I try and figure it out myself.
