I made some door panels out of plywood. The window crank arms don't overlap the shaft enough for the spline teeth to engage each other. The splines in the female part of the crank arm don't start for about 1/2", so if I could find some crank arms that had the splines starting immediately, I'd be OK, or if someone makes a spline extender for the shaft, that would work as well.
Have any of you run into this before and found a solution?
I am pretty sure the cranks handles from a Lariat truck are longer because they had the plush insert in the panels. Maybe check out some Econoline vans and see if they are different.
Thanks. I got around the problem by cutting the hole in the door panel the same as the OD of the round part of the window crank-arm, so the crank arm can go into the panel a bit, which solved the issue.
However, I did go in an auto parts store that begins with the letter A and was treated the same way I'm always treated when I go in there, which is why I avoid them. I asked the girl behind the counter if they had any crank-arms out on the floor. She said "No, but I can look it up for you." I told her I didn't want a direct replacement, but was wanting to look at other crank arms where the splines might start earlier in the opening. She said, "Well, I can't help you with that." It was more than a statement of fact, it was a "Get out of my face because we don't waste time with do-it-yourselfers" attitude. I get this same attitude with all of these type of stores.
They kicked my out a while back because I needed a bolt. They don't sell bolts. Cars and trucks have thousands of fasteners, but they don't sell bolts. I told them they weren't a real auto-parts store if they didn't sell bolts, they were just a play-pretend auto-parts store, at which point they asked me to leave.
That's interesting, Checker, Advance and AutoZone all have a HELP! section will sorts of misc stuff hangin on hooks. Need a clutch pivot? It's hanging there. Need door lockers? They are there.
From what I have seen it's more the NAPA stores around here that have eliminated the racks of goodies. Its more aisles of oil, car wash crap and batteries.
But, after all that, I can't stand those stores. I always look up what parts and part numbers I need before going in there. Nothing worse that going to the counter needing wiper blades and they are asking asinine questions like: What engine? 2 or 4 wheel drive? Anti-lock brakes?
WTF? None of that has anyhting to do with wiper blades ya dinks.
I have been in the same boat with autoclone (autozone) went to get a starter for a 96f150 they started asking me about the cooling system and if it was 4x4 with the quad shock setup wtf! So I asked what the difference was and get this they said well its the same part number!!! What the hell did they even ask me for all they know is to read their stupid computer and apparently their not to good at that grrrrrr!
AZ, Pep Boys, and Murrays by me all have a good HELP! section and I can usually find most of my oddball parts there. All 3 stores also have a decent supply of nuts-and-bolts. They are usually hanging on a 'spinner' rack, not behind the counter.
I just make sure I hop in the AZ website first, get the parts numbers and take them with me. It cuts down on the stupid questions.
The days of the old-style parts stores are gone, unfortunately, and this is what we have to deal with so just gather as much info as you can before hand and be prepared. If you don't have this info then be prepared to answer a few questions first.
I am not saying it doesn't suck, but that is the way it works.
When I am shopping there and a customer gets angry with the process I just ask them if they would like an application since the store is hiring and maybe they could help fix the system. Yes I get the 'you ***-hole' comment, but damn if I don't have fun!
Some small towns like mine will still have an auto parts store run by an old guy who doesnt even know how to use a computer but will know the part numbers to most stuff off the top of his head or if he doesnt he knows what old frayed edged book to look in. The aisles will not be neat and will be strewn with actual parts, not steering wheel covers/seat covers and racing gloves or 200 different types of car wash as Bullit said lol. Sadly, these stores are disappearing.
