I am wanting to put an exhaust on my PSD but don't want a muffler. Wandering if anyone has seen on without and how loud is it. I don't actually want it to be loud but if it is then so be it
A guy that use to live a few houses down had a ford diesel with no mufflers and it sounded horrible! I like somewhat of a loud exhaust but this was really really obnoxious! I would recommend checking out Flowmaster. They have a couple of mufflers that are specifically designed for diesels.
BTW- I live in Anchorage too I would recommend going to Jim Moores on commercial drive. They did a top-notch job on my exhaust a couple of years ago. Good Luck
Its not that it is obnoxiously loud. Its the quality of the sound I have a 01 PSD with no muffler and in the cab its not much louder but outside it is really loud. The sound is kinda a slappy flutter sound not very quality if you ask me. The best way to make a PSD with no muffler sound good is to put one pipe on either side of the rear bumper on the corners. The longer length of the tubes gives it a more powerfull sound.
My neighbor had an older 7.3 with an aftermarket turbo and he had a straight 3" exhaust, no muffler. It was very quiet considering and had a good tone to it.
It is louder, but not really loud. I don't think you gain any performance going without a muffler vs the straight thru mufflers that come with the exhaust kits. I have a B&B Performance exhaust with a straight thru 4" inlet/ outlet and it has a nice deep tone to it from the outside.
my buddy has a 97 dodge cummins turbo diesel ( i know i know i shouldn't be talking about it) but he's got a straight pipe in place of the muffler and it sounds great. its a little bit louder but not too much, and i like the tone it has to it.
