Simply posting for those that may encounter this. I do not own an F150 currently (Excursion) but a buddy went through an issue with his truck that may affect some of you. He has an 04 with the 4.6. Been a great truck (he was previously a Chevy guy. Anyway, it now has almost 90,000 and the factory battery died. So he went to Advanced auto, swapped the batteries out and went to drive off. It would not hold an idle when stopped or coming to a stop. I went over to his house and we pulled the owners manual out and went through the steps listed to allow it to "relearn" it's idle and fuel trim strategies. It didnt work. He drove it for a couple of days and ended up having the dealership reflash the PCM. Works fine after that, $75 later. Someone told me that you have to plug some sort of contraption into the cigarette lighter to maintain memory when doing a battry change on newer vehicles. I assume those with drive by wire as the older ones with an IAC seem to have no issues.
the PCM has a very limited KAM power...after 30 minutes the KAM power is gone and the PCM will revert to all of the factory defaults.
it takes quite a few key on/off cycles before the PCM will relearn the custom parameters. until then though, the truck will run rough and act funny as it runs off the factory presets.
I had the battery pulled on my 06 F-150 many times and a few on my 08 Expy...each time they act wierd for a few days afterwards...but then settle back down. Should have seen what the F-150 did after I installed the blower...that wierd idle and the blower did not mix.
I suspect your friend has another issue that this brought to the surface...or he simply didn't do enough key on/off cycles
The use of a "jump box" will allow you to avoid the dreaded reset to factory defaults. Attach the jump box to the battery cables before you remove them from the in vehicle battery. CAUTION PROTECT THE CABLES AGAINST GROUNDING THE POSITIVE! I slip a glove over the positive cable and clamp as a shield. Ground to the frame/block.
