I'm going to possibly be buying a second truck to serve as a parts truck. The second truck is currently not drivable so it needs to be towed about 110 miles or so. Does anyone know if I can pull an 83 F-100, 2WD with an 86 F-150 2WD using a car dolly? The 86 has the straight 6 with a four speed manual tranny.
I can't do a flat tow because the one tire won't hold air. I've read in some places where they recommend only towing a RWD vehicle in a car trailer. Is this good advice?
I wouldnt. The two dolly probably wouldnt be wide enough to fit the other truck on it. I would get a tire for the one your towing and either put it up on a trailer or use a tow bar. I have had really good luck with tow bars. Plus you wont find anyone to rent you a dolly because the vehicle your towing with isnt significantly heavier than the vehicle you planning on towing.
Yeah, I think you're right. I'm leaning towards a tow bar because the 86 only has a bumper hitch and I don't have the money to install a regular hitch right now. So I'm thinking a full car trailer wouldn't work well either.
If you flat tow, I would take the driveshaft out of the towed vehicle. Flat towing a automatic tranny vehicle that far usually ruins the tranny, and there is one 4 speed tranny Ford has that should not be flat towed either, so just to be safe I would pull the driveshaft.
Without a doubt disconnect the drive shaft from the axle but do not pull it from the transmission otherwise you will loose a bunch of fluid from the trans. Just strap it up on the side so that its still there just not connected to the rear end.
