I have noticed a strange problem with my 2001 F250, when I put the truck in reverse, the radio stops working, the lights stay on, you can see the station and such but no sound, as soon as you go into any other gear (automatic trans) the sound comes back on, anyone got any ideas?
Now that is a strange one. I've been sitting here trying to visualize what could be causing that and I have nothing.
Not that I can offer any real help with this, but out of curiousity,,, do the reverse lights come on when in reverse?
Something must be shorting somewhere affecting maybe the antenna ground? Maybe the power lead to the reverse lights is shorting to the body or frame causing the antenna to loose reception?
I will be very interested in seeing this strange problem sorted out. I hope someone jumps in for you with more knowledge with this type of (possible) electrical problem.

I don't know where to start, I was going to look at it this weekend, I did tap a wire on the radio to install a 12v dc adapter behind the dash for my gps I will try and take that loose and see if it makes a difference.
The plot thickens, while I was out tonight with the wife and kids, I was listening to the radio while they were in the store, once they came out, put it in drive, and boom, the radio goes off (again just sound), you can switch stations, put in a cd all functions work but sound, put the truck in park and it works great.
I wonder if it might be the head unit it self?
Or Maybe even the harness plug to the head unit is simply loose? It might be the slight jarring when shifting causing the plug to lose contact?
Have you tried randomly shifting up and down to see if the sound jumps off and on?
Maybe check for loose plugs then try the GPS splice you memtioned earlier.

I have already removed the gps splice, and still same results, I wonder if the shift sensor on the trans will cause this since it seems only to happen when the trans is in gear.....
Shifter sensor? I suppose it's possible but unlikely.
- Apply parking brake and block front wheels.
- Fire the Truck up.
- Find a gear that causes the sound to stop working.
- Turn up the volume on the stereo a bit.
- Crawl under the Truck and knock the shifter around a bit to see what happens.
- It wouldn't hurt to give the head unit a few good palm punches. Or the good old trusty "Bangs on the dash" above the stereo.
I know it's a long shot but it might help if you get any action from this "long shot" test.
I'm starting to lean more towards the head unit being the problem somehow.

Problem solved!!!! I bought a new transmission range sensor (shift sensor, neutral saftey switch) Saturday, but since snow was melting and my driveway was a river, I decided to wait till I got to work today (I am a mechanic). I pulled it into my service bay, crawled underneath and removed the old sensor as soon as I pulled off the electrical connection water started pouring out, I looked at the contacts and they were all corroded and green, I replaced the sensor with the new one, cleaned the electrical connector with some cleaner, put on some dielectric grease and pluged it in. Jumped into the truck started her up, shifted into Reverse I HAVE RADIO, I put it in drive, I HAVE RADIO. I guess the water was causing something to short out, I guess I should have tried cleaning the old sensor up and reinstalling it but I didn't. So if anyone else has the issue maybe the sensor is your problem too. Thanks guys for all your help.
