Well I finally got me a Ford. It's not a Super Duty V10 that I've been looking for (hard to find or maybe I'm picky) but it works for me. 2005 F150 STX 4x4 extended cab with 53k miles. Do you think I should have the transmission fluid flushed or do a drain and refill? I assume the filter should be changed too? Also, the spark plug issue has me losing sleep at nights. Well not really, but it remains in the back of my mind. What advice can you offer to help me keep them in the best condition possible? Thanks.
Ford says 100k for transmission change however not knowing how the previous owner treat the truck it wouldn't hurt to go a head and change it anyways. As for the spark plugs I changed mine on my 2005 F-150 SCrew Lariat 4x4 at 50k and broke one so that is probably a good idea too. I personally change my tranny and transfere fluid every 60k but thats just me. Better safe then sorry. Oh and I would go with the champion plugs if you do decide to change them. Just my 2 cents.
As for the transmission I have in the past went with a flush at 30,000 and them a change at 60,000, with a valve body cleaning at the time of fluid change. My wife's GM gave us trouble after a flush and dropping the pan and draining the fluid, doing the valve body cleaning solved the issue.
I believe the flush may just knock loose some sludge and I am unsettled about the chemicals that they use in the flush.
As for the plugs you will find many opinions on this forum: Mine is follow the TSB and take your time.
Good luck in your endeavor.
ah well there is no spark plug issue with the 4.6 so you do not have to worry there. You could change them now if you wish or at 100k like the manual says
