intercooler takes the air from the input side of the turbo routes it to a heat exchanger (the big radiator looking thing in front of the radiator) to cool off the air and then routes it to the output side of the turbo. this helps keep the turbo temps down so when you romp on the motor esp with HP gaining mods you dont melt the turbo down.

this can also be accomplished using water/meth injection

EDIT... here is Wiki's definition, lol, way more techinical than mine

yes they came stock on them. we use the spyder piece off a early 99 to convert ours because the intakes and the turbo are the same size as ours

if you have stage II's and a chip, is it a good idea to install the intercooler?

Intercooler lowers the air going into your engine after the turbo, which happens to compress (and heat) air. Compressed air is good, but better when cooled. An added benefit of an IC is it allows you to safely burn more fuel thus making more power, while keeping egt's at a safe level. Ultimately, all it is is a radiator fot the air you pump into and out of your engine.

I thought the inter-cooler was after the turbo and just before the air goes into the engine. So I don't think it cools the turbo down, just the air going into the engine. When air is compressed it creates heat, so it needs to be cooled. Thus it must come after the turbo has already compressed the air. Am i correct, or am I just retarded and have no idea what I am talking about?

It's a real good idea or you will be putting out some high egt's I would think. According to your sig you already have these things. I'd get some guages quick to keep track of temps so you know. If they are high, get yourself an ic. You really don't want to melt down some pistons too bad

As the intake air is compressed by the turbo, it is heated up. The hot compressed air is routed through the IC in front of the radiator to cool it before the air is consumed by the engine. The lower temperature air helps keep the EGT under control. It helps a lot if you tow/haul with power upgrades like injectors and a chip. Without the IC, I had more power than I could use because I was limited by my EGT, with the IC I can flog my rig much harder while keeping EGT at or below 1200. An IC is not really a power adder, but if you have other power adders it will help you more fully utilize them before EGT gets out of hand. My towing mileage is worse with the IC because instead of slowing down, shifting down, and turning my chip down on big hills I can now hammer it with no EGT worry.
