Lots of stuff to remove.I would take a digetal camera and take lots of pictures before you tear down.Make sure you have a manual and don't cheap out on the gaskets.Your leaving out a lot of information, like what is telling you it's a head gasket.Did you do a compression check?Losing coolant? Water in oil? Many miles on it? If you provide as much information as you can, there may be other stuff we can tell you to watch out for.You may want to start soaking your EGR pipe connections with PB Blaster or something and anything else that looks bad. That aluminum heat shield between manifolds is important, keeps heat of the fuel rail and stops vapor lock,so don't leave it out.Haynes manual is a good one to follow and most auto parts stores has them.Lots of info on here, you should get plenty of help.
Yes it has foaming in the oil filler, i have done 4 cyl. and 8 cyl. before so I don't think it should be too bad. The head looks very heavy, also I need to replace the push rod cover gasket, that also doesn't look too bad except hard to reach. I love this 6, what should I expect for mileage?
My '96 f150 4.9 5 speed stick gets around 20 on the freeway,a little less in town, but I have 2.73 rear gears and stock tires and 2WD.I use it to go to my other house in the upper peninsula about 365mi.,so it's kinda a highway truck, but I love it.You will see a lot of guys on here getting less, but they are running big tires and lower gears and most have 4x4's.A lot of guys see some white foam on their oil caps and dipsticks because of repeated short driving, not getting oil hot enough to get rid of condensation. How does the oil look? Are you losing any coolant?
