i have a 66 factory 4x4 with a 352 and a long bed step side. i plan on shortening the wheel base and i was wondering what would be the best kind of weld.
JB weld has the best reputation. (sorry couldn't help it)
I like either a z cut or a 45 but many use a straight cut just do a quality weld and fish plate.

as rare as they are...I wouldnt cut the frame...4493 F100 Styleside(double wall bed)
F250...3559 styleside...single wall bed...57-60 style..but correct for 61-6 4WD F250.
Some people like the short beds. Wheres Dwight for some long bed love?
A Stepped cut and fit is the best option. Use a fish-plate of the same thickness as the rail on the outside. Use no less than a 150 amp 220V mig weld to do the repair. Penetration is the key and weld each side grind the outside flat and add the fish-plate. weld that and dont grind the welds on the plate smooth.
i had an f-250 in highschool long bed single cab it was just to long. when i shorten this truck it will probably be a little shorter than a short bed. oh and can someone explain the z frame cut?
z frame cut: is down half way through the frame, make a 90 degree turn towards the front or rear (depending uppon where you start), cut horrizontally to leave youself enough room to take a chunk out, make a 90 degree turn down and now you have two pieces. Next remove the same amount of frame from the short section sticking out of both sides of the frame (i.e. if you want to shorten by 10 inches, remove 5 from the front and 5 from the back). Push them together and weld them up, and then fishplate. Its easier to draw what I mean than it is to type it out.

right after i posted that i got a picture in my head and it seems pretty simple. so now i feel dumb. but i have nailed down my entire plan and got some rough prices. im gonna put rockwell 2 1/2 military axles t-case and tranny, and possibly a cummins deisel. so i need to get rid of the current drive train to help pay for big foot to become reality and not a dream. but to be honest i dont know what the drivetrain is worth. if anybody does that wold be awesome.
the engine: 352 v8 with at least 99,000 miles but it runs strong 120psi per cylinder
tranny np435 works good doesnt whine and shifts good
t-case dana 20 one speed works also.
ford 9 rear
and dana 44 front
if any of you guys know what i could sell this stuff for individually or a good price to start that would be cool
