Ok, so I've searched the forums and have a vague idea of how to check timing, but can anyone outline the specifics? Truck is a 95 with 300 4.9 motor and 5sp trans, 2WD.
Specifically, where is the timing mark on the motor in relation to other parts, how do I adjust the timing on this motor as I've not dealt much with setting timing. How do you determine what 10* of TDC is?
The timing marks are on the balencer , you need to clean them up & highlight the 10* btdc mark , Im not sure where the spout conector is on a 4.9 , but you need to disable the advance , hook the timing light to # 1 cylinder find your timing pointer & see where its at . If it needs to be adjusted then loosen the hold down bolt on the distributor & turn it tell its at your timing specs . Tighten bolt & rehook advance,, I don't have a 4.9 so thats the best i can tell you ...Lew
The timing mark on the case cover for 10 degrees will be the deep v-groove.
On the balancer there are two hash marks. The one you will use is very thin and probably covered in crud if it is anything like my truck. I cleaned up everything with brake parts cleaner first , used some white chalk on the balancer hash mark so I could see it good. Once you get this done , Get the motor warmed up , pull the spout connector and check your timing , adjust as needed. I played around with a little more advance over the 10 degree factory setting , ended up going back to 10 degrees due to some pinging issues. hope this helps !
