The motor has been swapped so who knows what else. and since the punpkin has to come out any way pull it and see for shure what it is. Most F150 2 wheel drives will have the lighter axles, so the spiders won't work with your axles.
If I am reading this right, you have not owned it long I would check the front too while your at it and make sure they were a matched set unless you have run it in 4X with no problems.

....not exactly. There is no difference between the 2 wheel drive and 4x4 axles. All are 31 spline.

Ok so I have come to find out alot. Well if you just go by spinning the tire method you could really be off especially in a 4x4. If the ratios in the front and rear axle are not the same then they will turn at differnent speeds causing one to break. So I have a 4:10 ratio in the rear by looking at the tag on the front so they do need to be matched. I stilll have a few questions. The 4:10 ratio is very hard to find yet I do have two 3:25 ratio axles can I take them and put the third member in it to the Dana 44 or what are my options? Thanks

3.25s are pretty tall gears for a 4X4 but will be sweet on the highway with stock size tires with a 460 pushing it.

FmissingtheORD: Ok, you have me really confused with your last post. I'm not understanding what you're saying. But to answer your questions the best I can....

No, the spinning the tire method is accurate.....IF done correctly(see my previous post)

No, it doesn't matter if it's 4x4 or not, it's just as accurate

Yes, if you have mismatched gears, something will break if operated in 4x4 on a hard surface (but it won't be the rear differential).

Yes, the front and rear need to be matched.

Yes, the 4.10 ratio is very hard to find.

No, you can't put a 9" third member into a Dana 44.

Since the chances are very slim for you finding a used 4.10 ratio 3rd member........your best option is to probably buy a rebuilt 3rd member and put it in your axle. There are some pretty good deals on eBay.
