When I turn the steering wheel slightly right of center, there's a "click" in the column (which I can feel in the wheel), like a loose joint or pin. If I go under the hood and hold the rag joint while an assistant works the steering wheel left to right and right to left, we can definitely feel something loose within the column. It's not a lot, but any is not good. Suggestions? It's a 2WD.
There's an upper and lower bearing inside the column, possibly one of them are making the noise you hear.
There's a very slight amount of up/down play that I'm pretty sure is due to the upper bearing. The play I'm concerned about is circurferential, as I turn the wheel to the right from center, I can feel it "click". It's somewhere between the rag joint and the steering wheel. I'm not sure how the steering shaft is constructed, which is why I'm asking the question.
Pull your steering wheel and Three screws holding your turn signal switch. Then you will have access to your upper bearing. You will be able to check for the click and find it. If it's not there it would have to be the lower bearing.

Thanks, I'll take a look. I'm sure this will take care of the up/down and side/side, but I still think there's something wrong with the column itself. I guess the best way to describe the "click" would be as 1/4" of free play at the wheel.
