i just bought a 91 f150 and drove back home 2hours from where i got it with no issues till i popped the hood. noticed oil in the air filter compartment . truck ran great but has the oil in there and noticed when removed the oil fill cap it does have some blowback. is this normal for a high mileage vehicle. not sure myself for a thousand bucks it runs great just looking for some answers.. thank you to anyone who has info
i changed the pcv valve and it started blowback of smoke and also smoke into the air filter compartment. does this mean cracked ring or engine wear. doesnt smoke at all out of exhaust and runs great. not sure what to think. really havent owned older vehicle before so this is new to me.
when i changed the pcv valve it had air and smoke blowing into the air breather, the old one has suction coming from it and no smoke. not sure if it is suppose to let out air there or suction.. thanks for any answers
Fist off what are you working on engine size (6 or an 8 if you do not know the size)?
The PCV sucks crankcase gas out of the crankcase and into the intake mainafold.
I am not sure from what you have said that you changed the PCV valve.
If you are at the right part with the engine at idle you should be able to feel suction at the valve end while it is stuck in the hose and the hose is connected to the intake manifold.
Make sure the PCV valve rattles freely, by shaking it with your hand with the engine off, it could be stuck or jamed. Also, check the oil level, it's not overfull is it?
302 v8 , the pcv rattles fine just bought new one and popped in. while installed air blows out of the pcv hose that runs to the air filter box. the old valve had a suction at the same point but leaked oil out of hose while driving.and just changed the oil it is not overfilled.
You are putting this PCV valve in at the rear of the passenger side rocker arm cover are you not?
And the hose from the PCV valve runs up to the intake manifold right above it from from the valve, right?
your right i meant the hose coming from the oil fill cap runs to the filter box. thats the one that was blowing white somke out when i put in the new pcv valve. but with the old pcv it has a suction on the same hose and no smoke. thats what i was wondering is that hose supposed to have blowback or suction.
More or less suction, check and see if the PCV valve hose came off the intake when you changed the valve.
You also said in you first post that "it does have some blowback" when you removed the oil fill cap. How could it have had suction if it had blow by coming out of the oil fill cap?
well have drove the truck for a week now. still running fine first two days was loosing almost a quart of oil a day.put oil leak stuff in and has really went down almost to nothing. rear main was leaking some. but still have water going in not much though i put block sealer in radiator and is slowly doing better. i think motor is just worn out still runs great but has some blow back and still blowing a little oil into the air filter box. there is not that much water in the oil you can see it on the dip stick but the oil which i just changed still look new and has very little water showing in the oil where else can the water be coming from if its not a blown head or crack in the block.. thanks
get ready to find a new motor or rebuild yours. Once water gets into the oil it's all down hill from there. The antifreeze contaminates your bearings and once they are contaminated they cannot be cleaned of it. Being a high mileage motor your gonna get a little more time because everything is (loose).
One more thing to mention, the mechanics in a bottle stuff is just a temporary fix, whatever problems they seem to fix always comes back.
Not trying to discourage you but talking from experience.
