i drive an 02 7.3l when cold seems to have no power. gets a lil better as it warms up but still doesnt feel like it used to and it makes a funny hissing noise. just need to no which one i should replace first. the edge programmer i have says wastegate fail... how do i no if its the wastegate or silinoid... thanks
Depending on cold temps, your EBPV will stay on longer to warm up the motor. That hissing noise is normal. Your EBPV could be sticking if your getting that code.
what do i do to fix the ebpv? does any one have any pics so i no what im dealing with. also i put a boost guage on today im only hitting 19 lbs of boost and i have an edge programmer on it some say i should be around 25 any thoughts? the edge is on 60 hp setting THANKS FOR THE HELP
If you tap the brake pedal does the "hissing" sound go away? If it does then it is just the EBPV closing and the truck idling up a bit to warm it up quicker
Had my ebpv unhooked for about 3 years but I hooked it back up so she could warm up a little quicker - it's been a cold winter this year. With the 4" exhaust & a fairly loud muffler, I call this my jet turbine - I think you can hear it a quarter mile away. And mine also makes some noise around the turbo area but I think that's normal.
You can unplug it & see if your problem clears up. Should default to always open when unplugged.

^^^^^^ What he said.
The EBPV is designed to disengage when you hit the brakes. In stock form, Ford did this to prevent it from being an exhaust brake. If you hit the brake and the hissing does not stop, then the EBPV is sticking.
If you are having trouble accelerating, then the exhaust backpressure sensor tube might be clogged. If this gets clogged, the EBPV will delay opening or not open at all when accelerating. Here is a link showing you how to clean it out: Welcome to guzzle's Exhaust Backpressure Sensor Cleaning Maintenance Web Page
Or if you don't want the EBPV, you can disable it. Under the turbo at the pedestal, there is an electrical connector. That hooks up to the actuator that controls the rod that opens or closes the EBPV. If you unplug that electrical connector, it disables the EBPV and prevents it from closing.
As for the wastegate... you cannot hear it open, it's impossible. So the noise is not wastegate related. However, if you have a code for the wastegate, delete it and see if it comes back. If not, then don't worry about it. If it does, then you have a problem with the solenoid (sits on the front of the intake spider), or a problem with the wiring leading up to the solenoid.
thanks guys! i clear the code all the time and it still comes back. do u think it could be the wastegate or is that rare? ill check all the wires and solenoid. the hissing does stop after i tap the brake... thanks

Any wastegate code is related to the solenoid or wiring only. It will have nothing to do with the wastegate itself, or the actuator.
