New Guy Question #2...lol
The other truck I recently posted about fizzled away very quickly after getting more details. Here is the new truck I am looking at. Let me know what you think.
2002 f350 crew cab 4x4 V10 177000 XL Dually Shortbed. He is the 3rd owner (maybe 4th). It is used as a work truck with I guess a lot of highway miles. It has a single accident (no airbags / not a loss) on it's record. Has a slight manifold leak on the passenger side. Rear wheel tubs have some cracking near bottom (not sure if paint or actual fender damage).
This gentlemen is asking $7,500 obo. What would be a good offer for this truck? Does anyone foresee any issues with such high miles? The tranny works fine as does the 4x4 according to this gentleman.

Dually short beds are rare.
The V10 engine are good engines. If it has been maintained well, the engine should last well beyond 200,000miles.
I'd check big-ticket expense items closely: transmission and transfer case. Is the fluid nice and red? Smell it; if it smells burnt expect problems. Likewise with the tires. Are they ok? What about the inside duals? Buying 6 brand new load range "E" tires is a fair chunk of change. If the tires are bald, you may use that as a leverage item in negotiation. That manifold leak could very well point to a broken stud which is a PITA to remove and replace. Again, negotiation point. That will cost to fix.
The drive train isn't the only thing affected by mileage and years. Radiator hoses & suspension pieces like ball joints all wear out, and if they haven't been done by 177K, they're due. Factor that in the total bottom-line price of the vehicle. Think about what this truck is actually going to cost you in, say, 30 days.
Let us know what happens.

4x4 crew cab DRW V10 for that price is not bad.
Auto or 6 speed?
seminaryranger is right, a set of tires is $1,000 and redoing the front end is $1,000 for parts if you do the work.
I would still get it with one of those things wrong, but I would expect him to drop the price $1,000 for the tires and $1500-2000 for the steering.

Here is some more info:
1)The windshield has a small crack towards the bottom. It's nothing major, but it's there and will need fixing.
2)The rear wheel tubs are damaged (cracked). Nothing major, but noticeable when up close.
3)It needs new sparkplugs.
4)Engine needs a basic tune-up.
How much do you think should/could be discounted for these fixes?

If you're dead set on buying it, I'd offer him $5000 with the expectation you've got at least$ 2,000 to put into it upon purchase.
If it's got missing or rusted off manifold/header bolts that's going to be a pain to take care of. Plugs can be dicey if they've not been replaced before, especially at 170k miles. It also scares me when people say "it needs a general tuneup" when they sell vehicles. Every time I see or hear that I think the owner is really saying "this thing has problems but I'm not mechanically inclined enough to know what they are."

I agree with you Mike.
FranciscoJ, do you plan on doing the work or having a shop do it?
If you are fairly good at working on things then you should be alright. If you plan on having a shop do all the little stuff it needs it will add up fast.
He says it needs a tune up, whats wrong with how it runs?

That truck has been bought and used for a work truck.
It had four owners....
You describe it as being beat and needing a lot of work.
Almost 200,000 miles on a gas engine...think rebuild time.
This is basically a $2500 wholesale unit that they are trying
to make big $$$ on retail.
It is honestly not worth over $4,000 at the very most.
Have someone check what the auction rate would be for it.
I guarantee that they got rid of it for a good/major reason.
I can guarantee that you will be putting more than $3,000
into this truck in the first few months after you buy it.
Do you really need a dually?
Do you really need a 350?
Rare or not...this truck is not worth your time...pass on it.
Keep looking for something in better condition and hopefully
with lower miles.
There are too many people trying to dump their trucks,
because they cant afford them or dont want to pay for fuel.
