I had a recent problem with my '98 in a super heavy rainstorm. The truck shimmied and shook and the engine light came on. Ran like crap till I got it home. After the storm I took it out and ran it and the problem stopped. Took it to the local dealer, the computer said it was an "event on cylinder #8", end of story... They said nothing they could do as the event couldn't be duplicated.
Could it have been a fouled out plug, or do you think water got sucked up the screwy air intake cause of the heavy rains? Sound fishy to me...
I'd like to reroute the intake to one of those top of engine filter kits, maybe that will end the problem??
Check for a coolant leak from a radiator hose that drips on cylinder 8's coil pack. My dealer told me (when I had a similar problem) that Ford's hose clamps are a little weak. The coolant corrodes the coil pack and gives a miss, and I was told it is a common problem.

The tech told me about the coil pack problem, but he said there was no evidence of that (said he'd seen it many times before in other vehicles), and also that my truck wasn't in the VIN number series that had that problem??? Did they fix the problem on the line after they discovered it??? Hmmm....
Thanks for the coil pack tip, I'll use it for ammo on my next trip.
Mine had water in two of the cops on the driver's side. Dried them out and runs great. Check all the plugs for water. Occasionally it does it again after a rain, but runs great again when the cops are dried out.
