ok so how could i find out for sure what my engine is from the 5.8/351M, 6.6/400, 351 Cleveland i belive i got the 400 on it but the guy who sold it to me said it was the 351 so??? help? ha thnx
There was no emissions tag on mine so I put the #1 cylinder at TDC and stuck a welding rod in the spark plug hole until it touched the piston and marked it. Turned crank 180* and re-measured. The difference in measurements was slightly more the 4" so I have a 400. Cleveland's have a "2" or "4" cast on the corner of the head and the gasket surface at the front of the intake manifold is nearly level with the thermostat housing gasket surface. Not likely you have a Cleveland.

How exactly do you do that? Do you put a wrench on something like the crank pully and rotate it manually? How do you know top dead center of #1 cylinder? Watch your welding rod till it does not push up any higher, then measure and turn 180*?

I set the timing marks on the dampener to 0 degrees and then measured with the rod. Then I made marks on the crank pulley so I could more easily tell when I rotated 180 degrees and re-measured. Yes, I rotated the engine manually with a strong arm. I had all the plugs out at the time so it turned over easy. Not sure how easily it would turn with only one plug out.
Top dead center(tdc) is when the piston reach the top of the cylinder. You will need a 15/16 socket with a small extention. Mesure the distance between tdc and bdc(botom dead center) Should be close to 4" for a 400 and 3.5" for a 351m. This mesure is call the stroke.
