I have been told that you can hook a 4 speed to a 3 speed column, you just have to run a separate lever for reverse. The lever would be hidden to come out from under the seat. If it is true and can be done, I do not know. This would be a good theft deterrent though. I could see a car thief trying to find reverse if he could column shift.
Volvo i believe did have a column shifted four speed.
I'm unaware that Volvo had 4 on the tree, but I know the following did.
1936/37 FWD Cord which used a pre-select gearbox. Flick the column mounted shift lever into gear, then by pushing in the clutch, the transaxle shifts.
1962/64 Econoline which used the Dagenham 4 Speed.
Mercedes-Benz models: 180/190/219/220/220S.
Citroen ID 19, DS 21 and Palais.
btw: The blank shift collar used on 1961/77 F100/350's w/a 4 speed (C3DZ3790A) is the same as 1962/66 Falcon/Comet / 1963/66 Fairlane / 1965/66 Mustang.
