All things are relative, though. Obviously 3.55 gears with overdrive is better than 3.55 without overdrive in the above mentioned circumstance. I just always thought it made more sense to choose the most efficient final drive ratio first, then select a transmission with the gearing that most effectively suits the engine's output and driving requirements. A 1:1 top gear and a deeper set of lower gears makes more sense to me from an efficiency standpoint. That's what was so nice about my 3.08 ratio and the NP-435. The 2.73 ratio should be even better, as long as I don't plan on going over a 31" tire, which I don't. As much as I kick the idea around, I still might just go to a 30x9.5-R15, since it slots between the 235-75-R15 tires I currently have and the 31x10.5-R15s I like.

Argo,

I ran across this thread while searching for some ratio info and had to reply.I have two Dodge NP435's apart (one 2wd, one 4wd) right now, so let me know if you need any pics of the mainshaft, T-Case mounting, etc. I have swapped the input shafts between the two units, long story..........and the internals seem to be pretty much the same for the Ford and Dodge ones that I have seen. Best of luck with your project, sounds like a great idea.

Transmissino cases

Dentprone Hello oldbrokecowboy here. Might you have a good empty Dodge case that you would part with? I need to replace mine (cracked) too much torque. 4x4 type, although both types will work. Let know please. OBCB

Hi OBCB,

I just recently found the NP435 I was looking for....I will have another look around the salvage yard I frequent, I'm sure there is another one. It looks like the only difference between the 2WD/4WD case may be the rear bolt pattern, but I'm sure that could be drilled and tapped on a large drill press. I sure hope I don't crack mine!!! I am running dual NP435's, and I'm sure the rear case will see some serious torque. I will definitely get out to the yard this coming week and find you something. An empty case shouldn't be too bad on shipping either.

Down to cases

Did'nt realize you were in FL., almost as far from here as you can get.. Also thought from you post that you had extra cases. My bad. I have'nt looked localy yet to see what one would run me here. Thought I'd try a forum member first. I'm still interested but don't make a special trip. Thank you.
Next question; Are you hooking 2 trannys together, as in like 1 solid unit? If so I'm very interested, Pics please if possible.OBCB

Let's hear about the dual transmissions! It won't be a hijack, the original poster is looking for gear reduction. A transfer case is cheaper, and uses stock components. However, dual NP435's or T18's would certainly help slow him down for his parade uses!

Thanks BlueOvalBud,

Ok, but Argo, let me know if I'm stepping on toes.
Though not my primary purpose, I actually will be using this truck in a small parade yearly myself. I had thought about running another T-case, but this way, I can compensate on the fly without worrying about axle ratio or tire size. In fact, I could run 3.73's and still only be doing 1/2mph@2000rpm.....then shift right back to a 1:1 for street driving. As it is, I'm running 4.10's because I already have them. I'm waiting on some gears for my lathe to come in this week, and I'll be starting on the shaft coupler. The structural coupler to bolt the cases together will be fabricated steel and look a lot like the cast couplers used for transfer cases. I'm also running a mated NP203 behind all this.....glad I have a LWB
