Gasket material

Why do the FE blocks always leak on the intake manifold at the back? From people clunking down a heavy cast manifold on unset silicone?

I have seen rebuilds with lots of big gloppy blue silicone that didn't seal well.

Is the silicone necessary anywhere besides water gaskets?

I am thinking about using this on my intake, can anyone volunteer an opinion on Permatex Aviation Liquid Sealant?

Can't say that I've used Permatex Aviation Liquid Sealent, but I have used Permatex Right Stuff gasket maker and have never had a problem with it. No leaks, no drying out and no gasket blow-out.

If you have or can take the time, you can do it old school. By that I mean the way we did it with the cork end rail gaskets. First clean the end rails with starting fluid, ether or another super degreaser. Then put a nice, not thick coating of 3M Upholstery glue on the end rails with a little extra at the ends next to the heads, allow it to dry for a short time and place the corks, then repeat the glue on the top of the corks at the head ends only. Then carefully lower the intake onto the engine using your fingers at each end to make sure the corks did not move. There will be some gorilla snot oozing from the ends at the heads, don't worry about it at the firewall ends, nobody's going to see it. There will be similar oozing at the front, just leave it alone and you can remove it with a razor blade after it dries hard, if it bothers you.
Ford used to make the endrail gaskets in 2 thickness'. 1 for std. blocks and heads, the other about .125 or .1875 thick was for modified top ends (milled heads, blocks and manifolds). I prefer the corks as they never leak if installed properly.
