please help!!

i got a 2001 supercrew with the 5.4 with 180 000 miles , and latly it has been ticking when it is running , i dont know what it is...lifter?...rod and mains... anybody have troubles with this? it also is starting to shift hard, i notice it more downshifting on the freeway, its more like a jerk into the gear.. can anyone tell me what it possibly could be? also i was looking at getting a tranny temp gauge, i know im going to put the probe in the line between the tranny and the cooler, going to the cooler but how do i splice it in..thanks for any help

The 5.4 is a talker but with that said it could be a number of things. Broken exhaust stud (the back ones) loose spark plug, etc. If you haven't dropped the pan on the tranny, now is a good time.
