Peformance additions
I was hoping everyone out there could give me some ideas as to ways to hop up the horsepower in a 351 or 400. This could include cams, carbs, intake manifolds, etc. Please specify name brands and other important information. All help is greatly appreciated!!
Thanks
One thing to be wary of--just changing the specs on your intake system (manifold, carb, etc) and cam, etc. doesn't guarantee you'll have more "horsepower"--remember, every modification you make to your engine should be part of a cohesive package with a performance perameter you have in mind. Simply stated, if you want more bottom end power for say, off-roading, you'll need to choose components that perform accordingly and all work together. If you have a torquey intake manifold (emphasis on bottom end)combined with a top end cam (long duration), you will not get the best performance for your money and you will probably wind-up spending extra money to rectify the mismatch. Alot of manufacturers these days (like Crane cams, Edelbrock, Holley, etc) offer complete packages for engine modifications that all work together to get the same result. These packages are a good idea if you're not very current on the up-to-date offerings in the aftermarket industry because sometimes certain products won't work with what seems to be obvious
good matches (i.e.; cams with certain valve springs).
Best advice anyone could give you about your question could be to pick up a good book about Ford performance modifications--like, for example "Ford Performance" by Pat Ganahl (HP books) as there are just too many answers to your question to post all here.
