I recently had the timing turned up in my pickup because it was getting pretty doggy and was way off according to the guy that turned it up. I couldnt get much accelleration or get up and go out of it. So I had it turned up (since I dont know how to do it myself) and the pickup has more power but still not the snap that I am looking for. When you really put your foot in it the engine starts to rap up but then it kind of falters and makes a low rumbleing sound but when I back out of it a little it quits and accelleration increases. I thought the harder you push on the go pedal the faster you acclerate. Any ideas?? It has a stock 351M in it.
I have a manual transmission (an NP 435 I think) A stock Motorcraft 2bbl carb. The rumble comes from the engine compartment because my mufflers make a different tone sound than this. And finally the engine doesnt ping when you really get into it. I made sure of that before I took it home from the shop. I hope this give you enough info to make a diagnosis
First off it DOES NOT take a rocket scientist to adjust timing, you can certainly do this yourself, heres what has been recomended to me and countless others by "Pony Carburetors" : With engine at normal operating temp. and vacuum advance hooked up, turn your distributer clockwise until you get the highest rpm out of it, it will tell you you've gone too far by starting to buck and slow down, then lock distributer down & test drive, if engine pings on acceleration back off just a hair at a time until engine just pings or just barely does not, your engine will definatly run better and give more gas mileage, They also recomend switching to PREMIMUM GASOLINE.
One more thing... How long since your last "tune-up"? how about the all important FUEL FILTER? Rick
