It can be caused by a lot of things, Including worn or bad spark plugs or cables, bad timing, damaged sensors... too many things to list. For a basic definition on "backfire", try wikipedia, it will help you understand.

Pull fault codes FIRST! Otherwise you are on a wild goose chase guessing at what part of the ignition system is causing the problem. KOEO and KOER tests will definitely yield some code(s) if the engine has misfired.
