I bought a 76 F150 about 3 months ago and I am trying to find some addtional information about it. The frame is actually a 77 4x4 model that was rolled. The body is off of a 76 F250 4x2. The guy I bought the pickup from swapped bodies and frames to make one decent pickup. The F250 came with a C6 and 3.73 gears but that IS NOT in the pickup. I got that infomation from the VIN decoder at this site. Does anyone know if there is a tag or anything attched to the frame that will tell me what the 77 came with? EX(rear end gear ratio, what type of axles, etc) I know in the 67-72 models there are tags on the firewall in the engine compartment and then there is one attached to the box. If anyone can help I would really like that.
Hi Fordman,
To get you started, the truck should have a 9" ford rear and a dana 44 in the front. The axles should have a tag on one of the cover(or drop out) bolts. The tag will have the ratio stamped on the top line, left side. Other #'s on the tag will be ford part# and a code for open or limited slip diff. The only other option for ratio if there's no tags is to lift the wheels off the ground, turn them and count the driveshaft turns- just over four revs on shaft, one turn of wheel=appx. a 4.10 ratio. 3.75 turns on shaft would = appx. a 3.73 ratio. The front may be a reverse cut(rotation), high pinion or a standard cut ring & pinion. Hope this helps, Chuck P.
Just to amplify a bit on the above, if the rear
9 inch axel has 2.5 inch leaf springs it is a 3300 # axel ( might be off a bit on the rating ) if the leaves measure 3 inches it is a 3600 # axel and has larger diameter axel shafts ( a good thing ). A C6 auto has an integral bell housing and big block bolt pattern. If the engine is a 351-400 M or a big block then you have a C6. The small blocks will have a C4 or FMX. A '77 with a front Dana 44 with locking hubs should also have an NP-205 transfer case ( a very good thing )
