I've got a 2000 Ford Excursion with the 7.3 diesel. It's got 83K miles on it. 4x2. It's not garaged and it never gets below 40 degrees where I have it ... and never above 85 degrees ... San Francisco.
I only drive it once a week and I've had trouble starting it lately. Here's the details:
- both batteries are about 2 years old and have plenty of cold cranking amps
- right battery is about 12.9V, left about 12.7V
- alternator is sending plenty of charge to batteries when car is running (with and without accessories going)
- left battery has no "noise" when car is turned off, right does have "noise"
- if I put a dome light on when the car is off, both batteries have "noise"
If I've let it sit for more than a week, it has juice but not enough to start the car if I can't get it in the first couple of tries. After driving it for 30-45 minutes to a meeting, it can sit for awhile and fire up vigorously for the return journey.
So, I'm guessing that I've got some sort of parasitic battery drain on the right battery only ... strange. Any ideas?
I'm a little fuzzy on the term "noise". Can you elaborate?
I would disconnect 1 battery, put it on a charger and see what it comes out as. Repeat for the other battery.
Ditto, I have no idea what "noise" is! voltage has nothing to do with a battery's ability to put out cranking amps to start the engine. you do need to test them indivudually with a carbon pile load tester preferably... next time you drive it and get home, disconnect the batteries for the week then reconnect and see if it still has a problem starting.... My money is on a bad battery too...

I agree. However, if it cannot even maintain 12+V, I don't see the point with using a VAT 40. If it can, take it to Battery Mart or some battery shop and they can test it for you with their load tester. If fully charged, it can only make say 7 or 8 V, it is definitely shot.
