OK guys, this may be nothing but just wanted to check. I've noticed I have some I think blueish smoke when I fire it after sitting overnight or parked all day while working when I first fire it. It's a pretty good push of smoke on startup. It runs fine, uses no oil, etc. My batteries are getting weak, going to replace soon. Glow plugs 1 yr old. GPR is original factory yet for what its worth.
I noticed yesterday once I got to the lumber yard (10 minutes after starting) to load some stuff on a trailer I left it running and at 600rpm idle it was smoking a little bit. Turned on high idle and didn't notice it anymore.
I guess it's kind of bluish gray? Just wanted to check with you guys and see what you think.
I don,t know how cold it is there but if it is cooler than normal out this is normal mine does the same thing I put my ebpv back on with a manual choke cable so I can manually operate it actually to cure this, sounds like your not getting it warmed up enough .
If you figure it is getting warm enough then maybe it is time to have a good look at your turbo I know you said you are not going through any oil but it may be the start of things
another possibility could be bad Injector or O rings.
What were your EGT,s when you got to the lumber yard?
It was still cold at the lumber yard, only a couple blocks from my shop. Turbo freshly rebuilt last year and looks good, no oil anywhere, no play. Injector orings new a year ago too. EBPV is gone. It was 20* yesterday morning, and the other morning was about 5*. It is definitely more noticeable now that its cold out. Neither morning was it plugged in either. Didn't think I was going to be using it either day, usually I plug it in.
thats the way mine started just a little blue on startup tell yesterday when i tore the turbo off it was blue comming out like mad and oil dripping out pipe.. rebuilding turbo now as i type this...
It don't come out like mad, just when its cold when it starts and idles a little. No oil seen at all. This is the first real cold test since I did my mods in my sig last winter. I'm going to go see my kid and grandkid tomorrow (300 mile round trip) so I got it plugged in on a timer to start 3 hours or so before I start it. See what happens tomorrow I guess. I do know I need new batteries.
Well, for the exhaust to be blue, it has to be burning oil in the chamber.
How it would get there, I have no idea.
Smoke out the tail pipe from oil is white, so I've learned this year.
Ever since I've put in bigger injectors, I get blue smoke at startup.
Sometimes I wonder if its fuel additive seeing as I use 2cycle for my additive, but no idea how the hell it would make that much.
Could just be the motor burning up excess oil in the cylinders.
No idea. But mine does it too. No problems if its warmed up, and none in the summer time, only in the winter.
This is completely normal in my opinion for these older engines. Mine puts out a stream even when its 60 degrees out which I'm certain is from the larger injectors. It clears up once the EGT's get above 200 and I never see it again.
On almost every older diesel engine I've been around it smokes like this on a cold start. It's not a huge amount but just a small steady stream. Nothing to be concerned about.
it will burn blue if the turbo is leaking both ex side and intake side seals. thats why my intake pipes were full of oil.. and that makes blue smoke.. look at my thread you can see lots of pictures of the oil in intake.
b-uno, Darin said he rebuilt his turbo, my guess its not that. Talyn, I'm confused by what you say. "Exhaust to be blue its burning oil" and "smoke out the tailpipe from oil is white". So, what is it if your burning oil, white or blue? I always thought that white is unburned diesel.

i believe that unburned diesel is WHITE, and unburned oil is WHITE, but burned oil is BLUE at from what ive seen. im not no expert on nothing. im best at napping.

OK, the first and last I think is right but 'unburned oil is white' I have to think about. Oh, I'm suddenly tired, I must be like you and need a nap, an 8 hour nap. LOL Seriously, does the oil get vaporized and come out white? Like a liquid (oil) turning into a gas AFTER the combustion chamber?

i dont know but when my seals went out it would be white some and blue there was allot of oil in the exhaust, ti have a stock muffler so who knows how many gallons of oil are still in it.. i just got it back togeather a hour ago and there still oil in the pipe.
Oil injected or leaked into the exhaust will be white. We inject it into the tailpipe on our turbine engines to mark airtanker drops and it comes out white
