After the Excursion, what next?

I'm not there yet but the day will come that I will need to consider another rig. I love my X but don't see myself driving it with 350K. What next? I like the size and ability to carry a bunch of gear or people. I tow a lot of weight so I need a good hauler again. I love the 7.3 and 44 gals of fuel capacity. I hate the ride but I'm working on that.
So, what truck is a good choice for the future? I'm not seeing any real options out there. Any thoughts?

Well, you're out of luck with an SUV but you may consider a 3/4 -1 ton crew cab truck with a cap or tonneau cover.

Myself, where I don't need the towing ability, I might look at a diesel H1 Hummer... not as much cargo ability but should suit my needs for space and offroad capability. A frankentuck with Unimog chassis and custom body may also be viable.

I know these options aren't going to be anyone elses cup o' tea, I'm just a fan of different....

Yes, if you need over 6 passenger seating and towing, your only real option is another X.......Crew Cab Trucks can fit up to 6, a Expedition wont have nearly the towing power, even a suburban HD with a deisel wont have the towing. So things to help narrow down.....how many people would you routinely need to transport including driver....what is normal tow load? that might help use give you some options.

I figure when mine gets to 350,000 I will have it rebuilt to almost new for less than I Could buy or make a truck with equivalent abilities.

Hauling 7 people (total) isn't unusual for me. My largest trailer weighs about 8,500# (with vehicle in it) although it has a max GVW of 10,500#.

As for the ride. It's pretty harsh but I'm going to do a front spring swap soon. Loaded (w/trailer) it's great but empty, even w/ 5# of air in the bags it rides like an empty dump truck.

Why not just drag the trailer with you everywhere you go

I believe the Chevy HD SUV's max out at 7500 but im not certain on that. Im afraid your kinds stuck unless you can squeeze 7 in a Quad Cab truck....

I might just end up doing the total rebuild thing. It would be cheaper and I'd end up with the rig I want. What I'm afraid of is those electrical gremlins that seem to pop up whe rigs get older that tend to leave you stranded.

If it comes to that and there's not a viable option, I might just go the custom route... I can buy a new f250 shortbox for around 45k, and 25k for the conversion puts it at around $70k...

A new 05 X limited cost about 50k, so it's really not an outrageous premium to pay.. and you might be able to save some by buying a base model pickup, depending on what the customizer's 25k includes...

When I'm done with the X, I'll lean towards a used International Harvester CXT crewcab pickup.

Get a F-350 SRW and take it to this guy and have him make you a 6-door suuuuuuper crew cab;

http://www.****************.com/index.html The website is Custom Autos by Tim; ****************.com

Or you could take a new F-350 and have this guy make you a new Excursion, it's one of his new options. Does make it a pretty pricey truck, but it's a great way to keep driving new Excursions.

Does anybody knows if Centurion is still in business? They were the company that use to convert F-250's and F-350's into SUV's before the Ex came along. They probably are as they were/are a big truck body company.

The Sub 2500 will tow 10K, but probably not very good with its gas engine!
