ok i got a 1972 camper special with a 390 in it for free! it is my first vehicle and im pretty happy with that, but it is not at my house right now im waiting top get a permit to drive it to washington but im wondering what i can do about that radio when it does get here. can i take the old one out and put in a new head unit in and fit some subwoofers behind the seat and where would the amp go? sorry if this is a stupid question, this just seemed like the only place i could go to get some answers. thanks
Does it have the fuel tank behind the seat still? If it does I dought there will be room for anything back there. The is a metra kit you can get to make the new stereo to sit level in the dash. I am still waiting for mine to come in.
Congrats on your 1st vehicle. Save your money for the gas station. Just kidding. Your truck probably came stock with the gas tank behind the seat. If it's still there, it would have to be replaced with a frame mounted tank. There are numerous posts and what others have done to get the tank out of the cab, not sure any are a "perfect" solution. An easier solution maybe to build a custom box that sits in the center of front floor board. I did this, but only put a couple 6x9's in it and the top was flat, making a great make shift center console. Make sure you secure it to the floor with some "L" brackets so it doesn't slide into your leg while driving. The down side of this concept is that your future girlfriend has to sit all the way over on the passenger side of the truck, instead of right next to you. Think about it.
Amp? Your young and presumably have excellent hearing, forget the amp and save the hearing. If your thought is to make the truck a ghetto machine, set it free and trade it in on a shetrolet with side saddle tanks.
I'm with tomw128 in his last paragraph -- deal with the mechanical and safety issues first.
Make it safe for you, your passengers, pedestrians, and other motorists.
A booming stereo is cool. However (and my ears are ringing at the moment from tinitis due to loud noise -- ie stereo and power tools), spend your money wisely. Your gf will be much more impressed if you arrive at the destination than if you don't no matter how loud it is in the cab...
