Its best to stick with the 5w-20 that is specified. You may start to have problems with the cam phazers not operating porperly. Might try a good brand synthetic oil.
How many miles? Is the engine giving you trouble - knocking/rattling/tapping, loss of oil pressure, burning oil, leaking? If not, the old rule of thumb would apply: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it..."
Why would you want to put thicker oil in the truck?
Probably like me. I grew up with 10w-40 and 20w-50 in the older cars and Florida heat. Then with six diesels taking 15w-40 and the Hemi powered 2500HD being happy with 5w-30, 5w-20 "seems" too thin. It seems to result in excellent UOA's over at BITOG so I just need to get used to the thought of it. Goes in looking like Iced tea and comes out looking like coffee. But it works.
well the truck is hitting the 200000 km mark and it just seems to be ticking a bit under the hood. the only time i hear the tick is at 1000 rpms and at low idle but 1000 is when i really notice it, the plugs are all good, and it has a leak right at the transmission and oil pan. its oil not tranny fluid. not leaking bad but i pick my truck apart all the time. the idle on the truck has been getting wierd, it wants to stall with im creeping the truck into a parking stall i dont know what it is thought maybe a vaccume leak or something ?
Yeah, the idling problem has nothing to do with the oil - probably the IAC valve - and the tapping could be an injector.
If you're worried about the tapping, have a tech listen to it, identify it and go from there. Assuming an additive or a change in oil vis will fix it would be a waste of time and money.
