diesels dont compression brake on downshift the way gassers do.
using an exhaust brake with an auto you need a way to lock the torque converter, other than that I have no experience running one on an IDI... yet
one of my friends has one on his powerstroke...granted not the same beast as an idi by any stretch, but it has nowhere near the holding force a cummins does...we did a 7% grade with an 8500lb trailer....unless the motor was turning 23~2500 RPM's the brake wasn't worth much....engaging at 2000 or less and you really didnt know if it was there.
Could have been his unit, but we both kind of concluded it was cuz the stroke was a higher winding motor than the cummins
