Hello, iam new to this side ofFTE. iam looking into a 1997 expo with 180k on the clock for $1000.00. is it worth it? what should i look for as far as major problems go? it is owned by by neighbor, so i have known the truck for a while. iam just woundering what to look at and any info would be great, thanks.
I think the 97's were pretty solid. I think just the usual items on anything. One thing to be aware of is the blend doors. If it has auto temp controls the blend doors can be a problem. If it is a 4 x 4 the shify motor on the tansfer case could be going out and need to be replaced. Don't really hear much on 97's.
I would check all the usual things that I would look for when buying any used car or truck. The main things i would look for is, has the truck been maintained regularly, how many owners has the truck had. Look for signs of a accident, look for odd paint lines and blends which might mean the truck has had body work at one point. Also check all the engine. if the oil fill cap has white powder or residue on it, don't buy the truck because normally that means there is water in the engine. Also check to see if the 4x4 works if it has it. Check the suspension and tires also, tires are not cheap these days. Also just for piece of mind I would do a CARFAX report on it. As far as any major problems, there aren't that many that come to mind, just the usual stuff for a used car.
