Sorry Bdawg, I wasn't trying to sound Pompous. I know you were trying to help him and give him advice. As you've probably guessed by know I was in Law Enforcement for quite some time. People like to help with their knowledge as you did. I've done the same thing and been just wrong.
If a cop stops a car, and the public VIN has been tampered with or doesn't match additional VIN's on the car. Be prepared for at the very least a prolonged traffic stop. If you are really lucky, they'll let you pull into a nearby service station, put it on the lift, and check things out. If you're not lucky, or the cop gets a bad feeling, the car is going to be impounded, and you are going to get a ride to lockup.
The vehicle will be held until its been gone through with a fine tooth comb, and probably a dog too. In the mean time, you will be accruing storage. They'll probably call in an officer with advanced auto theft traing to go over the car. All of the hidden VINs will be examined to see if any parts are reported stolen.
Once you are positively identified, you'll probably be released until the investigation is completed. But believe me, it can be a total PITA. Guaranteed your day will be ruined.
