Two years ago I read an article in a Mustang magazine about someone who installed a Gear Vendors overdrive unit in their drag race Mustang. I called them and ordered a catalog and now I can't find it. I looked on the internet and found a company in Las Vegas who installs the Gear Vendor unit. Thier web address is http://drivetrain.com/overdrive.html
The Gear Vendors unit gives you overdrive that is equivalent to 1/2 of a normal gear (as if you had gear 4 1/2 instead of 5th). The theory behind their unit is that often you only need to change 1/2 gear, such as when you are drag racing and you hit your RPM limit 100 yards from the traps. Shifting up by one gear will bog your engine and hurt your ET whereas shifting up by 1/2 gear would help your ET. Also, if you are in a heavy motorhome or laden truck and you are going up hill and starting to slow down. Shifting from 4th to 3rd will rev your engine too much but shifting from 4th to 3-1/2 would be great.
Their unit installs behind your trans and actually attaches to the transmission. You therefore need to shorten your drive line. Their units are bulletproof and really great. They cost over $2,000 so they are not cheap, but when you need one you'll gladly pay it.
One thing I forgot to mention: You can use their unit in every gear. Therefore, if you have a 4-speed, you would then have: 1st, 1-1/2, 2nd, 2-1/2, 3rd, 3-1/2, 4th and 4-1/2.
