got the whole kit today and read the booklets cover to cover. I'm wondering if my springs are "dual springs" they do have an inner spring, yes but its certainly not a substantial spring. comp says to remove the inner spring for the 20min break-in, then tear it all apart and put the inner back in. this is no race cam, do i really have to do that? doing it with the motor back in will be a b!tch! any engine builders have input? thanks
It's a big PITA but tearing your motor down because you wiped out the cam is an even bigger PITA, i'd highly recommend removing the inner springs for break-in, be sure to use a high zinc oil for break-in too.
Sounds like your talking about the spring dampers. I would and have never remove the. When you crank your motor up have your valve covers off and the first thing you want check is#1 oil psi #2 make sure the all your push rod our all turning. But before you installing the push-rods roll them on a very clean flat table top and check if any our bend no more then 0.20. Buy all new ones. You'll have to check for the correct length too. This is very important..
Okay if all good and the motor is running pretty good setting the timing by
maybe by ear and all push rod turning good then put your v-covers on and then do your cam break in. If any of the push rods our not turning you'll wipe a cam lobe. Most guys just put the covers on and don't know any better and think all is good and okay if they crank the rpm up for 15-20 minutes. But if the push rod don't turn well you hear about it all the time, they wipe the cam lobe.. my 2cents..

a spring dampener makes sense to me, even the stock springs (or at least what was put in after a rebuild in years past) have these in the middle of them, look like a steel ribbon.
yup those our just dampeners not what you'd call inner springs.
When the lifter does not turn is when you'll wipe the cam lobe, so if push rods our turning this means the lifter our too..my 2cent.
