We're going on a trip next weekend through the mountains and I'm doing some tune up work on the truck prior to the trip, as it was this same trip last year that spelled the end for my previous motor. Anyway, I replaced my fan clutch and decided to reroute some of my spark plug wires after reading how common crossfire is on these motors. I have a stumble that sometimes appears under heavy load at lower rpms 1500-1800 (climbing a hill at freeway speeds for example). Anyway, while rerouting the plugs I noticed that the cap felt loose. I popped it off and all of the terminals had a buildup of black carbon, as did both ends of the rotor. I cleaned them off with some sand paper and reinstalled it. Cap feels tighter but still moves a bit.
I've had greyish carbon buildup before but never black. What is the difference? fyi - the current cap and rotor were installed new with my motor in the spring and have maybe 5000 km on them.
Pretty common up here in the wet Pacific Northwest, lots of condensation too.......clean it up with some electrical contact cleaner and monitor how soon it builds back up.......Probably wont see it once summer comes.
