first my truck starts up and idles about 1500 and then it drops to about 1000. ive replaced my IAC and TPS. what else could be bad. spark plug wires? distributor? i cant go get codes cuz the truck doesn't move at the moment 5.0L FI
I'm not understanding why you can't get codes...all it needs to do is start. There are two tests you should run. Key On Engine Off (KOEO) and Key On Engine Running (KOER). There are so many things that can cause your idle issue that you'd just be throwing money at it without the codes.
how do i get codes, i was told i have to go to a shop to get them. and i forgot to mention that every once in awhile the RPM's will drop to about 400-600 and then try to stall and then it jusps back up to 1000
The best way is to buy an OBD one code scanner....you can usually buy one from stores like Advance for around $30. Short of that here's a couple of ways to pull codes without a scanner.
Use the link the previous reply sent. You can pull the codes with a paper clip. All you need to do is count the flashes. It may take a few tries to get the hang of it. Your truck will display two digit error codes. At this point all I would worry about is any stored codes and any that may be displayed during the KOEO portion of the tests. From the same website.
Rough idle can be caused by dozens of issues. Start with the basics, i.e. when were the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, filters changed?
the wires and cap have never been replaced in the entire trucks life. the spark plugs im not sure about but i might try and retard them a little bit and see what that does, the filters have been changed many times and all that is up to date
yeah next paycheck im gonna do that and for the idle problem, would the exhaust not being hooked up all the way properly cause this. i just swapped from an AOD to a C6. i had to cut my flowmasters and then i just tack welded it back together just in case i had to take it back out.
