Cold start question

Hi. Just got my truck a week ago and I'm spending lots of time learning about it. I have a question about cold starting. It seems that the truck doesn't go to fast idle when it starts. Basically, it's like this... I get in, pump the gas once to set the choke and crank. It starts and immediately wants to idle down and die. If I hold the gas down for a few seconds to keep the idle up (maybe 10 seconds), it will idle when I let off, but it's at the normal idle speed.

This morning, before I started it, I looked to see if the choke plate was open (it was).. then hit the gas and looked to see if it snapped shut (it did). The truck is a 73 F100 with the 302 and stock carb. Once it warms up, it runs jut fine..no stalling, good idle, etc.

I've searched and searched and read a bunch of posts here, but I'm still confused. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

sounds like your choke may be out of adjustment or sticky. i know my truck does the same thing, regardless of the weather, temperature, or any other factors. it just plain doesnt like to run before it gets warmed up.

Loosen up the 3 screws on the choke cover and turn it a little counterclockwise. See what that does. The fast idle is adjusted with a screw facing the firewall on the passenger side. That's how the 2150 carb is adjusted on my '79. Yours is probably the same. Good luck.

When you open the throttle the choke snaps shut. GOOD!!! When it starts the choke pull off should open the choke between 1/8 and 1/4 inch, This gives it enough air to keep running. You can check with some one starting the truck for you. Open it a little with your finger and see if it keeps running. Some choke pull offs adjust with a screw on the back of them, some adjust by bending the linkage. When the choke shuts look on the passenger side of carb behind the thermostatic housing. There will be a stepped cam that the fast idle screw rides on and idles up the engine when cold. After the choke warms up and choke plate is all the way open the fast idle should not touch the cam, you will have to open the throttle and the cam should fall off the screw.

I'll check this in the morning. I was reading a post here about adjusting fast idle.. I may try to follow those directions without fearing that I'll break something. Thanks for the responses.
