Will do. Thx a lot for all the input. This is definitely the place to get reliable info. I'm gonna replace them and still test the alt. to make sure it's working properly. Then back to chasing down my shaky acceleration. That's on another thread. Maybe the battery problem is related....Ron.
Definitely always do both batteries at the same time. As mentioned earlier, one will always be compensating for the weaker one, so you'll be buying 2 new batteries anyway. May as well make just one trip to the store and not have to worry about getting the first new one replaced.
Water level is good. I've learned my lesson on battery maintanence before with my trailer. Ive had the same 2 12v in there for five years. There about done as well. Gonna switch to 6v in there. Not sure why this one went out. I clean the posts and check them pretty regularly.
I had the same problem with my 99 powerstroke it is pretty common for the Alt. on these to go bad . I replaced mine 2 years ago and have had no problems since.
Changed both batteries already. Still gonna take it down to have alternator tested. They said they could test it for a bad diode, with it in the truck. I know it was said that I would have to remove it. Not sure Autozone dude knew what he was talking about.
Autozone I took mine to tested it in the truck. The tool said the diode was good. The GPs were on, and the guy didn't know that the output would be well below 14V until the GPs are off, so the tool indicated a low voltage issue and said to replace it. So make sure your GPs are off when they hook it up.
