Transmission suggestions

I am in the process of rebuilding a '66 F100 240ci and Im off to a good start. my only problem is, I live in LA and i'm thinking that my 3 speed manual is not going to be fun after the first week to drive. I wanted to also upgrade to an automatic to be able to drive on the freeways without the engine winding so high.

My question is, what transmission(s) would bolt up? I came across a guy that I bought a hood off of that also had a C6 with the torque converter for $100 so I bought just because it was a good deal, thinking if I couldn't use it, at least I can maybe re-sell for a couple extra bucks. I am not sure what it came off of though, would that bolt on to my 6cyl? its probably too much transmission, but thats why I am looking from some help out here.

any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

a c-6 tranny depending on the bell housing will bolt to the fe family of engines not totaly sure if they made them for the small blocks or the inline motors

There is a small block C6 that will bolt up to your 240 just fine but with out the true lock up like your manual has it will cost you some rpms on the highway. Have you considred an OD transmission like an AOD out of a mustang or something.

What freeway is it that can you drive on...at over 35 MPH in normal LA LA Land traffic?

Welcome to FTE

It's no fun shifting gears in LA LA Land traffic either. I did it for 44 years in my '65 F100 with its 3 on the tree Borg Warner T-85N O/D.

1965/74 F100/350 240's and 1965/79 F100/350 300's (except 1973/77 F350's) came with C4's, but...

1978 was the first year Ford offered the C6 in an F100/250 with the 300 I-6 as an option (standard equipment in F350's). Everything will bolt up to your 240.

You will have to modify the driveshaft, and you might consider ditching the anemic 240, and instead, going with the 300 at the same time.

Thank you all for the warm welcome and quick answers. I knew someone was going to comment about not moving at all in LA traffic, Haha, and its well deserved. But I do drive out of the city sometimes and I do drive up the coast often to visit family...

I am open to the best setup as far as transmission and AOD is definately an option as well as a bigger motor. but my knowledge about it is limited, hence why I am here.

My main goal for now was to get it on the road and enjoyable to drive first, the 6 is in very good shape after a good tuneup and compression is within a good range, so I would like to salvage it if I could, maybe soup it up in the near future and still get decent gas mileage.

Thanks for all your suggestions, keep them coming.
