Not sure about tha MAF sensor, but the PCV valve can sure cause oil consumption, as well as oil leaks.
My '01 V10 uses between 1-3 qts every oil change (3k miles) depending on how hard I work it. In the summer while pulling my camper it uses a qt every 1k or so and normal driving a qt every 3k. I have 155k on it, so not too worried. Oil is cheap!!!
I grew up a chevy man, that's all Dad drove, and I still have 2. But he had several 454s, and he would always say "If a big block Chevy don't use at least a little oil, something wrong!!"
How about the part where the local Ford dealer recommended Lucas additive to soften the valve guides? Does anyone use this product?
Soften the valve guides ???? Don't you mean (or they mean) SEALS?
I wouldn't use Lucas products if you paid me. My brother-in-law used their "stabilizer" in two Ford vans he owned. Within 2 weeks, the 90K mile I6-300 spun a main bearing (yes, main) and the 351W suffered catastrophic oil pressure loss. The 351W survived, barely, long enough for him to drive it until it was a lost cause and scrapped it.
The I6-300, he had to pay to get it totally rebuilt. The rebuilder took it apart and found it had definitely lost oil pressure at some point.
Moral of my little story: Don't bother.

After helping another guy with a fuel regulator problem that was giving him way too much fuel pressure at low-loads, and the fact that he noticed high oil consumption around the same time the fuel pressure was a problem, I'm wondering if you're running overly rich, it's washing the cylinder walls of oil, and burning it off?
Something to check, that's for sure. While you're at it, check the PCV plumbing and throttle body for oil.
Look at this test. Lucas oil stabilizer is good at making the oil foam. What about Additives?
I have some Lucas stabilizer that I use ONLY in my old Briggs lawnmower. It helps the oil stick to the parts because it relies on a slinger to throw oil on the parts for lubrication. Won't use the Lucas in anything else.
If your valve guide seals are worn or in poor shape you will get some smoke at startup after the trucks been sitting a bit. I would try to change the PCV valve first and then go from there. You can try running some high mileage oil which has extra seal conditioners in it. (Like Valvoline Max Life)
The Ford PCV seems like a style I have never seen before. I can blow threw both ends easily, shine a light through it. The NAPA replacement was a standard to me PCV valve. Blow through one end, can't through the other.
There is no way I would replace a full quart with the Lucas oil additive, like they suggest. I have a bottle, and that stuff is thicker than maple syrup. I do however, like to put a dab in here and there. Just a big enough gob and that's it. I could see it having a beneficial effect in helping to seal up any leaks in the engine, but I would definitely substitute out a quart of regular motor oil for the Lucas oil.
