I'm just wondering where the temp gauge needle stops when hot on the gauge ? Mine is currently barely getting up to the N, although the heater is still O.K. this is around 185f as measured with my scan tool. Air temps are averaging at -10c (14f) here right now.
3L with just front heater.

So your reading 185 At the beginning of the normal scale?
the Ford idiot temp gauges should only be used to monitor for extreme overheat.
they are a relative gauge, not an accurate gauge
cover all of the first 3/4 with duck tape. only watch for it to go over to the red peg.
the PCM monitors the ECT sensor for temps, not the single wire sender the crappy temp gauge uses
far more accurate. the PCM has a program section that shuts down the engine in case of overheating, saves the engine and don't have to depend on a cell phone video playing texting driver.
At about 1/4 scale you are approximately 196° if your sender is accurate. I know this because that is where the stock thermostat opens with a new OEM sender unit installed. So the hot end of the scale is very hot. You do not need to know the exact temperatures, only that it is hotter than normal and should be looked at.

Yes (185 at the left side of the "N"), before I replaced the thermostat the needle would cycle between the O & R & occasionally get to the M. It then blew a hose joint before the heater (the plastic one at the L bend going into the heater core). The thermostat eventually stuck closed while my wife was driving & half emptied the rad, luckily she was almost at her destination & noticed the temp gauge at the HOT end of the scale. Luckily no damage to the engine. However now with the new thermostat it runs on the cool side 180-185f, I like it to get up to 195. I'll see how it runs in the spring & if still below 190f I'll put in a MC thermostat.
Well I just bought this 95, the guy had a new radiator put in and there was No thermostat. I went and got a OEM 192. Gets to the middle of the N slowly creeps up the the beginning of the O and jumps down to right before the N in like 5-10 seconds to go down.
Crazy but working good Id think.
got an air bubble in the cooling system, probably in the heater cores or the back of the blocks/heads
park with the nose higher by at least a ft., let idle with the cap off.
