my son's 4.0 97 Explorer has rough idle. check engine light came on. got codes P1151 and P0153. I thought I might have a vacuum leak. when I pulled the top cover off, behind the idle air bypass valve, there is a piece that looks like a small plunger with a wire comes out that goes to a small swivel. this swivel sits on top of a piece on the top intake. when I took cover off, this was disconnected. the swivel was off to the side. what is this piece and what does it do? thanks.
Any chance you can post a photo of what you're talking about? Sounds a bit like you might be describing the EGR valve, but it wouldn't have a wire coming out of it, just a vacuum line. Or maybe the Throttle Position Sensor, but that would have three wires and would be on the side of the throttle body, not behind the IAC.
I took cover off and that swivel popped off again. the wire is actually a vacuum line with a plunger. when you rev up the engine, vacuum pulls the plunger moving that swivel piece. still have no idea what this part is called or what it's function is. anyone know what it does?
I put a piece of metal across the top of that swivel to prevent it from popping off. the cover is holding it tight in place. truck now feels like I have an extra 50 horsepower. I step on the gas and it just takes off. before it was a real dog. I wonder what this piece controls on the intake.
It controls a flapper valve that basically varies the path that the air takes into the cylinder. At low speeds, the air path is long, which tunes the intake to work efficiently at forcing air into the cylinders at that speed. At higher speeds, the valve opens and causes the air to take a "short cut" straight to the intake valve. This reduces friction and allows more airflow and better tuning at high speeds.
This valve opens a port between the two intake plenums at low speed to smooth out running but closes it at high speeds so that each plenum supplies intake air to only three intake ports for increased power. I read that somewhere but can't remember where.
