well i thought you meant the balljoints, me u joint on the axle shaft is pressed in and out, no threads like the drive shaft, and i have never put thread locker on any ujoint bolts, and i have been plowing with this truack for three years, never had anythiing rattle loose, i dont know what lower shaft u r talking about i guess
on the upper i had to cut the rubber bushing and six sawsall blades later, cut the bolt, now i have the knuckle off and still the joints stuck in those holes, the chilton doesnt say anything about thread lock or anything about installing

I took mine up to Pep Boys and had them press the old ones out and the new ones in, as they have higher air pressure in their lines than I do in my garage.

I missed your post earlier about thread locker on the threads...I thought he was talking about someone coating the ball joint body with it before installation (I've seen that happen before)
As for the threads, mine came with a nut that has 3 embosses to lock on the threads after installation. The book doesn't say anything about thread locker, nor does the papers that came with the ball joint...I'll use the red stuff.

I bought the Motorcraft ball joints. In the instructions for it, it recommends using blue threadlocker on the lower u-joint. I used red because, hey, why not? I've got an impact if it ever needs to come off again, but I'm also looking at the possibility that if it ever needs to come off again, with 209,000 miles on it now, I'll probably have another truck by then.
